When Water Damage and Fire Damage Mix
When our Water Team is called out to a home, most of the time it’s because there’s just water damage on the property.
On this particular job, our Water Team was involved because there was water damage AND fire damage throughout the home.
Now, it’s not that uncommon for there to be water damage alongside fire damage.
When the fire department is called out to extinguish a fire, they do their best to ensure the fire is put out completely.
To do that, they soak the appropriate areas of the property to not only extinguish the fire, but to prevent it from combusting into flames again.
This job was one of those instances.
An electrical fire started in one of the walls, between the first and second story.
Most of the smoke and fire damage was kept to the second story, with most of the smoke damage contained in the attic area above the first story.
There was a large hole in the ceiling of the laundry room which allowed a lot of the water from the attic to run down.
It brought with it a lot of the insulation, causing quite a mess.
The water damage was evident in the kitchen ceiling, as water spots appeared at each of the joints of drywall.
In the downstairs bathroom, there was water damage along the walls, as the water ran down from up above.
The laminate floors showed signs of water damage as well, with bubbles and swelling.
That is why we called in our Water Team. They brought in the drying equipment to salvage as much as we could.
Fans and dehumidifiers and odor-fighting machines went to work drying out the entire first floor.
There were lots of materials that could be salvaged, like the counters and the cabinets.
The floors were not able to be salvaged. Once those materials soak up water, they expand, causing separation from neighboring pieces.
They are unable to un-swell and return to their original size, so they must be removed.
The subfloors and walls were dried out completely, and the next phase could begin.
We removed all of the charred materials, replacing them with new materials:
- new rafters
- new wiring
- new duct work
Now that the new materials are put back in place (before we insulate and begin finishing the house to feel like a home again), we make sure the smoke smell is gone forever.
We spray seal all of the wood to eliminate the smell of smoke from seeping back into the home.
Our No Smoke Odor Guarantee provides peace of mind in your newly updated home.
After the necessary timeline of allowing the spray seal to dry and set in, our team was able to finish rebuilding the house, turning it into a home.
- new drywall
- new paint
- new floors
- new trim
We brought the cabinets and countertops back in, and we brought in their appliances.
It was looking like a home again!
