Time for Spring Cleaning

Author: Chris Massie April 14, 2023

As the temperatures begin warming up this time of year, it is time for spring cleaning. The longer, brighter days help us get excite to tackle the spring cleaning checklist we create each year. Be sure that a few of these checklist items make it onto your list to prevent your home from experiencing unnecessary water damage.

  1. Inspect your roof:
The high winds we have had this spring can cause damage to your roof. Look for any damage or leaks and have them repaired immediately.
  2. Clean your gutters:
Remove debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure that rainwater flows freely away from your home’s foundation. The further you can get the rain water away from your foundation, the better.
  3. Check your foundation:
While our winter here in Ohio was not long and harsh, we did have some deep freezes. Look for any cracks in your foundation, and repair them as necessary. Cracks can lead to water leaking in and causing damage.
  4. Test your sump pump:
Sump pumps can get clogged with sediment, especially if they have not been run very much. Inspect your sump pump to ensure it is in good working condition before more heavy rains arrive.
  5. Check your basement:
Look for signs of water damage, such as dampness or mold. Sometimes it appears where we do not expect. If you notice any issues, have them addressed immediately.
  6. Check your outdoor faucets:
Before you begin watering your flowers and your gardens and washing your car in the driveway, inspect your outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks and damage. A faucet can freeze during the winter, causing unnoticed leaks. Make those repairs when you notice them.
  7. Ensure proper drainage:
As we talked about with the gutters, you want water to move away from your home’s foundation, not toward it. Make sure the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling around your home.

You can easily knock out this checklist in an hour! By performing these tasks when it is time for spring cleaning, you can help prevent water damage in your home. If you find any issues, take the time now to make the repairs. Water damage is often more costly than many of these maintenance repairs.
