Types of Water Damage

Author: Chris Massie April 19, 2024

It has been a wet few weeks here in Ohio, which means our phones have been ringing off the hook.

We specialize in water damage cleanup, helping to Dryout, Cleanup and Rebuild after many types of water damage.

We work in residential homes and commercial buildings.
Yet we do not help in every type of water damage cleanup.
There are certain types of water damage that we do not help with.

Let’s explore the types of water damage that Swartz Restoration is equipped to handle, and let’s explore the types of water damage that Swartz Restoration is not equipped to handle.

What Types of Water Damage DOES Swartz Restoration Handle?

Clean Water

Clean Water Damage is the source of most of the jobs we handle.
Clean Water Damage results when a water line for running water in a home or building ruptures.

There are many water lines that lead to different areas of the home.
Some lead to faucets in the kitchen or bathroom.
Some lead to outside spigots.
Some lead to sinks in the garage.

Other water lines lead to the washing machine, the dishwasher, the refrigerator, or the water heater.

Whenever one of these lines ruptures, clean water runs all over, causing water damage.

What do you do if you have Clean Water Damage?

The first step is to turn off the water so it stops flowing all over.
To do this you may need to turn off the Water Main supply to your home, but it could just require turning a valve on that water line.

The ruptured water line must be repaired so that further leaking does not happen.
We recommend having a plumber come in and help.

The second step is to call us at Swartz Restoration. We will help you dryout the affected areas in the quickest, most effective ways.

Gray Water

Gray Water Damage is another source of many jobs we handle.
Gray Water Damage results when a drain line from an appliance leaks, causing water damage to floors and walls.

Some appliance drain lines that can leak are washing machines, dishwashers.
Other drain lines that can leak gray water are sinks and bathtubs.

Another major water damage issue are sump pumps.
When they back up, they’re many times classified as gray water.

This type of water damage tends to cause foul smells more quickly than that caused by clean water.

What do you do if you have Gray Water Damage?

The first step is to call a plumber to repair the leak.

The second step is to call us at Swartz Restoration to help you Dryout, Cleanup and Rebuild afterward.

What Types of Water Damage Does Swartz Restoration NOT Handle?

Black Water

Black Water Damage is one type of water damage that we are not equipped to handle.
Black Water goes by other names such as sewage water, septic water, or hazardous waste water.

To properly Dryout and Cleanup after Black Water, proper training, proper equipment, and proper safety protocols are needed.
While it is our goal to one day be able to handle this type of water damage cleanup, it is not yet that time for us.

What do you do if you have Black Water Damage?

The first step is to … you guessed it, call a plumber!
Many plumbers can help you stop the leak, which is the first priority.

The second step will be based on your plumber’s recommendation.
They may be equipped and able to help you cleanup the situation.

If they are not, then they will be able to guide you to someone who can.
