Which Home Appliances can Cause the Most Water Damage?
Which home appliances can cause the most water damage? In our 35 years of experience, we have been called to Dryout, Cleanup and Rebuild many homes because of water damage. Even this year, we have received multiple calls because major appliances have caused water damage.
Today, let’s look at the top four major home appliances which can cause the most significant water damage.
- Washing Machine:
There are three hoses you will want to inspect to ensure your washing machine does not become the source of water damage: cold water supply, hot water supply, and drain hose.
If the hoses that connect the washing machine to the water supply become damaged or loose, water can leak out onto the floor and potentially cause significant damage. We were called to a condo in Lima a few years ago because one of the supply lines burst. The hose weakened over time, and the pressure caused it to leak in the middle of the night.
Also, inspect your drain line for any clogs, which could cause an overflow.
- Dishwasher:
Like washing machines, dishwashers also have hoses that can become damaged or loose and cause leaks. You will want to inspect the same three lines: cold water supply, hot water supply, and drain hose. Under-the-cabinet style dishwashers tend to feel out-of-sight and out-of-mind, yet we were called to a home in Bellefontaine when a dishwasher drain hose overflowed. It caused water damage to multiple rooms in the house.
Also, ensure the dishwasher’s door seal is tight, otherwise water can leak out during the wash cycle and cause damage.
- Water Heater:
One overlooked appliance is the water heater. While there are the in-line style of water heaters, most homes still have the traditional water heater tank. It is a massive tank that holds and heats water. Over time, water heaters can develop leaks, which can lead to water damage in the surrounding area. If the water heater is located on an upper floor of the home, the water can even leak down into the lower floors and cause significant damage.
Here are some tips on how to inspect your water heater for potential damage.
- Refrigerator with Ice Maker:
Many people move their refrigerator while doing the indoor spring cleaning, and if they are not careful, can pinch the supply line when moving it back into place. Pay careful attention to the ice maker’s water supply line as you slide the refrigerator back into place. We have been out to two homes this spring because of water damage caused by a refrigerator supply line.
Also, if the defrost drain in the refrigerator becomes clogged, water can overflow and cause damage. Be sure to inspect that as well.
